The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is currently searching for a ninth suspect linked to a shooting that left three civilians and a police constable dead.

Eight officers were arrested on Saturday in connection with the September 2024 incident in Bultfontein, Free State. The fatal shooting reportedly occurred after a domestic dispute escalated.

IPID confirmed that the arrested officers face four counts of murder. They are currently being detained in Welkom and are scheduled to appear in the Bultfontein Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

According to IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping, the incident involved a high-intensity tactical manoeuvre that turned lethal.

“The police officers allegedly executed tactical entry into the house during which they discharged their firearms. Three civilians and one police officer died at the scene and 43 empty cartridge cases were collected from the crime scene," Suping stated.

IPID’s investigation further revealed that all the deceased—including three members of one family and the police officer—succumbed to gunshot injuries.
