CAPE TOWN - September 15 marks the start of National Clean-up and Recycle Week and sustainability organisations are calling on citizens to make recycling a lifelong habit.

The annual campaign is used to bring awareness to the landfill crisis in the country and to encourage citizens to partake in recycling initiatives.

Producer responsibility organisation, Petco, is urging residents to start by implementing practical changes at home.

Marketing manager for the company, Kara Rohleder, said their aim was to divert recyclable waste from landfills.

"Have a look for a clean-up this week, I think that by participating in clean-ups and having conversations with other people that are interested in doing clean-ups, there’s always good conversations that come out of it and I think that when people see the extent of littering in the environment, we are often then drawn to make more change."
